How to arrive to the Aeolian Islands

Options

Lipari is the largest island of the Aeolian Islands and the tourist capital of the whole archipelago. It immediately hits visitors due to the white expanse of pumice that was once exported all over the world. Besides being rich in inlets and vegetation, it also has some unexpected artistic and architectural treasures. It is also famous for its breathtaking sunsets over the sea, the peaceful atmosphere and the strong flavors of the typical Aeolian cuisine. The archipelago can be reached from the airports of Catania, Naples, Palermo and Reggio Calabria; by sea, with hydrofoil, from the ports of Naples, Messina, Milazzo, Palermo and Reggio Calabria and by ships from the ports of Naples and Milazzo. Timetables and availability of navigation means change according to the seasons. We recommend to consult the timetables on the websites of the shipping companies.

Hydrofoil

The boarding port are Milazzo, which is the most served; Naples, Palermo, Messina, Reggio Calabria. In summer the connections for Lipari are further extended by: Palermo, Messina, Milazzo, Naples, Reggio Calabria, Capo d'orlando Vibo valentia marina;

Train

The nearest railway station to the Aeolian Islands is that of Milazzo, in the province of Messina. Convenient if you are traveling at night, a little less if you are traveling by day because Sicily it is not currently equipped for high speed. From the Milazzo train station to the port you can take a local taxi or take the bus (about 4 km / 10-15 minutes). When you arrive at the port you can take the ferries leaving for Lipari, and in about 50 minutes you will reach Lipari.

Airport

There is the possibility of arriving to Eolie from four nearby airports, depending on the possibilities, and well connected to the Islands during the summer; From Catania - Fontanarossa airport From Palermo airport - Punta Raisi From the Reggio Calabria airport - Strait Airport. Naples Capodichino Airport

Car/

Boarding point - Palermo / Catania / Messina / Milazzo You will need to reach the port of Milazzo which is the best served by highway with your vehicle. Once at the port you can catch the ship to the Islands (SNAV / SIREMAR / NGI.); Naples - If you have chosen for convenience of arriving by car, the port of Naples is well connected with the Aeolian Islands, obviously with more frequency in the summer; through the ship you will arrive without problems directly on the island

Travel examples

Roma/Catania/Lipari

If you are in the capital to reach the island, our advice always based on the availability of time and material, are: airplane Rome / Catania (about 1.30h). Once you get out from the airport on the right there are the ticket offices to reach different areas of Sicily; the fastest way is to take a minibus (Alibrando / Compagnia delle Isole) to Milazzo (journey time around 2h); arrived in Milazzo, you will go to the "Liberty Lines" hydrofoil ticket office, during the summer season there are connections every hour for the Islands and especially for Lipari, being the most connected, in about 50 minutes you should arrive directly on the Island!

Milan / Naples / Lipari

With the train o with the car, it is also possible to reach the island.

New York/Palermo/Lipari

It seems like the title of a film, yet we can boast of being connected to the big Apple too; with a flight it is possible to reach from the United States directly the Sicily, precisely the airport of Palermo, small but sufficiently supplied; once disembarked you can take a quick taxi if you are in a hurry, or a bus to the port of Palermo, from there in the summer you can easily find the Aeolian Islands, in about 5 hours you should get directly to Lipari

Parigi/Reggio Calabria/Lipari

From Paris it seems far away, but actually every year we have a lot of French visitors who come to discover the beauty of the Aeolian Islands; mentioned in many transalpe guides; from Paris for sure the fastest option is a flight, direction Reggio Calabria or better still Catania. From there with the right connection you can take a taxi / bus to the port of Reggio or Milazzo in case you land at Catania. We always recommend the sicilian port as it is the one most connected to the islands.
